Daley: police must explain teen cop impersonator

January 27, 2009 (CHICAGO) A 14-year-old boy is accused of dressing in uniform and reporting for duty Saturday at the third police district on the South Side. He was partnered with a real officer and both went on patrol.

Five hours passed before a sergeant questioned the boy and discovered he was not actually an officer.

"You pay a sergeant x amount of money you pay the field lieutenant an x amount of money. These are managers for the police department in that district and they have the responsibility to answer all the questions concerning how this person could do this," said Mayor Daley.

An internal investigation is underway.

The boy pleaded not guilty to charges of impersonating a police officer in juvenile court on Monday.
