The pastor of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral thanked publicly Sunday all of those who have helped his church since it caught fire on Wednesday.Mass was held Sunday in the auditorium. A fire Wednesday morning caused heavy damage to the attic, and flames tore through the roof. All of the water used to put out those flames damaged the cathedral. Fr. Dan Mayall said the building was drying out, and engineers were assessing the damage.

He thanked God, those who came to mass, volunteers, church staff and the Chicago Fire Department.

"I am not exaggerating with this next statement: The Chicago Fire Department saved Holy Name Cathedral. Holy Name Cathedral was coming down at 5:30 on Wednesday morning. They saved it. They don't always do that for big buildings. They did. And so we thank the Chicago Fire Department from the bottom of our hearts for saving our church," said Mayall.

Fr. Mayall said there was no word on what started the fire. He also said it was unclear how long it would be until services could resume in the cathedral.
