Study on new moms and psychotic illness

February 11, 2009 3:00:52 PM PST
New moms are in the greatest danger of developing psychotic illness in the first month after they give birth, according to a new Swedish study. It's not something that happens often, affecting only about one in one thousand women.

But the consequences can be grave to both mother and child. Mothers who lose touch with reality may harm themselves or their infant.

It's still not clear why post partum psychosis occurs although there's evidence that the huge drop- off in estrogen levels that occurs after delivery could be a factor.

There's more on this research in the journal Public Library of Science (PLoS) Medicine.
