Alvarez appoints new chief prosecutor

February 19, 2009 (CHICAGO) John Blakey will serve as chief of the Special Prosecutions Bureau. He has been a prosecutor in the US attorney's office. One of his first assignments will be to develop new anti-corruption legislation to present to state lawmakers.

"As we all know, public corruption in Illinois has turned our state into a national laughing stock," said Anita Alvarez, Cook County state's attorney.

"Illinois is sick, Illinois is sick of public corruption, Illinois is sick of violent street gangs and Illinois is sick and tired of a legislature that stands by and does nothing," said John Blakey, chief of Special Prosecutions Bureau.

Blakey was on US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald's team that prosecuted Tony Rezko.
