Girl shot on SW Side dies

February 21, 2009 (CHICAGO) The victim, 16-year-old Rachel Beauchamp, was pronounced dead at 1:45 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the medical examiner. Police are looking for a suspect.

There were three teenagers riding in the car when they encountered a man with a handgun.

Police say Beauchamp may not have been the intended target but she may have been with people who were.

Rachel Beauchamp was a passenger in the SUV. They were heading east on 42nd Street when someone opened fire. At least one bullet struck Beauchamp in the head. The two other girls in the car were not hit.

Beauchamp's family gathered at Mt. Sinai Hospital Friday morning hoping for a miracle.

The Kelly High School student's mother told ABC7 by phone her daughter "is a fighter. She has a good spirit, always happy and very smart. She has been trying to straighten out her life."

The teen's mother could not explain why her daughter was out at 11 o'clock on a school night. She says her daughter was supposed to have gone straight home after school.

On Friday evening, detectives were investigating possible gang ties to the crime, but they've made no arrests.
