March 5, 2009 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) --In Springfield, state lawmakers on the Mass Transit Committee are considering legislation that would limit free transit rides for seniors.Former Governor Rod Blagojevich added the free ride program to a mass transit tax increase bill last year. The free rides are expected to cost Chicago area transit agencies $58 million this year. Some lawmakers think that's too expensive.
The House bill under consideration would limit free rides to low income seniors. Others would still get reduced or half fare rides.
Governor Quinn has said he'd oppose legislative efforts to end the practice.
