March 6, 2009 --
In effort to decrease deadly infections, hospitals now have strict guidelines for staff wash their hands or use hand sanitizer. But it turns out bacteria could be hiding in an unexpected place: the cell phone. Turkish researchers say they found all kinds of bacteria, including the dangerous MRSA superbug, on cell phones.
In a study of 200 doctors and nurses, 95 percent of their mobile phones were contaminated with at least one type of bacteria.
The study in the Annals of Clinical Microbiology and Anti-Microbials says banning cell phones is not practical, but researchers say all hospital workers need to start cleaning their phones regularly.
