Study blames thousands of deaths on ozone

March 12, 2009 A study in the New England Journal of Medicine says of Americans are dying each year from lung disease caused by atmospheric ozone.

The greatest risks may be for those living in hot, dry cities such as Los Angeles. It has one of the highest concentrations of ozone.

The report also found that tiny components of smog called "fine particulate matter" had a clear link to cardiovascular death.

Researchers say this is one of the first studies where they have been able to report separate independent effects from both particulate matter and ozone.
