According to the department of corrections in Michigan, Sherrill has a record of weapons violation, armed robbery, kidnapping and breaking and entering.
CN Railway police say on Monday at 9 p.m., they received a call of a suspicious man in the bushes near the Homewood Metra station. They say it was Sherrill, who did not cooperate and shot at officers. Officers fired back, killing him.
"At that point, they saw the man. When they arrived, they called him to come to them. That's when he started running toward the commuter parking lot. And the other officer was able to stop him in the parking lot, and that's when he pulled out his gun and fired at least one shot at the officer," said Patrick Waldron, CNR spokesman.
No officers were hurt, and police say they did find Sherrill's handgun at the scene. Illinois state police are also helping in this investigation.
