April 24, 2009 3:34:35 PM PDT
Mayor Richard Daley celebrated his 67th birthday Friday with a little help from some young friends.Students at Hawthorne Elementary Scholastic Academy put on party hats and surprised the mayor with a birthday song and cake. They shared pieces of the mayor's cake, which was decorated with the city seal.

However, the mayor wasn't just visiting the North Side school to party. Since Friday was also Arbor Day, the mayor helped the youngsters to plant a tree.

There were similar tree plantings at other public schools in the city Friday as part of the mayor's new "Chicago Trees Initiative", a city-wide effort to plant trees, promote conservation and protect the environment.
