Long lost Ben Franklin letters discovered

April 24, 2009 Professor Alan Houston found the letters in the British Museum and says they have not been seen in 250 years.

The letters are not in Franklin's own hand. They are copies made by his friend Thomas Birch, an archivist who copied dozens of historical letters by hand.

Houston says he thinks the original letters were destroyed during the Revolutionary War.

The letters covered a five-month period when Franklin worked to help the British troops fighting in the Seven Years War.

That war pre-dated the American Revolution.
