Flu concerns could change Holy Communion

May 3, 2009 At Holy Family Parish on the near West Side Sunday, the pastor asked members of the congregation to abstain from taking communion if they weren't feeling well.

Clergy and congregants alike said the flu was on their minds.

"Just use your good sense, and everything will be fine, and everything is fine," said Holy Family member John Blyth.

"I'm concerned, not worried, but I also carry the hand sanitizer and wash my hands as much as I can. But I am concerned," member Therese Beslic said.

"People indicated they appreciated the sensitivity to the issue, and also for people who also may want to not fully participate at this point, that's ok ," said Holy Family Parish Pastor Rev. Jeremiah Boland.

The Chicago Diocese urged its member parishes to use common sense but did not call for changes to the common cup distribution of communion.
