Girl rescued from burning Chicago building

May 3, 2009 The fire started at about 11:45 a.m. Sunday in the 1600 block of North Central Avenue.

Chicago firefighters say, when they arrived, heavy fire was coming from the second floor. When they went inside, the found the girl on a bed and brought her to safety.

One firefighter described his feelings on making such a rescue:

"I've got children of my own. Very excited, very nervous. Glad we were able to bring the child still breathing. She has a good prognosis," said the Chicago Fire Department's Greg Swanson.

Investigators say it appears the cause of the fire was electrical in nature.

The girl remained in critical condition Sunday night.
