Compared to non-coffee drinkers, women who drank up to three cups of coffee daily during the first three months of pregnancy were 1 1/2 times more likely to deliver a baby with cleft lip.
The risk increased slightly more for women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day. They also found that women who drank tea had a reduced risk of having a child with a cleft lip.
The findings are in the American Journal of Epidemiology
