Coffee during pregnancy may boost cleft lip risk

May 6, 2009 Researchers examined more than 1,000 women in Norway. Norwegians tend to drink a lot of coffee and Norway has a relatively high incidence of cleft lip.

Compared to non-coffee drinkers, women who drank up to three cups of coffee daily during the first three months of pregnancy were 1 1/2 times more likely to deliver a baby with cleft lip.

The risk increased slightly more for women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day. They also found that women who drank tea had a reduced risk of having a child with a cleft lip.

The findings are in the American Journal of Epidemiology
