City employees could face layoffs soon

May 9, 2009 (CHICAGO) The notices are to be issued in the next two weeks because most union contracts require 30 days advance notice before employees can be laid off.

Chicago's Mayor Daley says city hall must furlough employees other than police and firefighters to help close a $300-million budget deficit.

"This is a real crisis. The economy is much more difficult than anyone understands. We have glimmers of hope. That's good, but you need more than a glimmer of hope. You need people go back to a job, and not being laid off, and not losing their home," Daley said.

The Chicago Federation of Labor told ABC7 Chicago Saturday that a coalition of almost 40 unions that represent Chicago employees is considering the city's request.
