Lawmaker proposes alcohol tax

May 14, 2009 Some lawmakers are backing a five cent increase in the state's alcohol tax.

The bill is sponsored by State Representative Sara Feigenholtz. She says the tax would raise $254 million for Illinois and boost funding for treatment of alcohol and drug addiction and mental health services.

The nickel-a-drink tax would add 30 cents to a six-pack of beer, 25 cents per bottle of wine, and 85 cents per 750 milliliter bottle of liquor.
