Stricter ID rules for travel in effect June 1

May 25, 2009 Starting June 1, U.S. citizens returning by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean must have a passport or other secure ID.

Right now, Americans returning from those countries do not need a passport at the border or a sea port.

Back in 2007, a new rule required u-s air travelers to have a passport upon return from those countries.

If you are planning a driving trip to Canada, remember it can take a month or longer to get a passport.
