Ricardo Martinez Jr., 23, had survived two tours in Iraq, but he was gunned down in Chicago in 2006 outside Wrigley Field.
Steven Bryant, 24, was convicted of the murder.
The judge called Bryant cowardly and said he has a malignant heart.
Bryant mistook another man for a rival gang member and fired multiple shots, killing Martinez.
Bryant could have been sentenced to life in prison.
