State rep. calling for U of I resignations

June 7, 2009 (CHICAGO) Rep. Mike Boland is chairman of the House higher education committee, and he is calling for hearings by his committee and asking Governor Quinn to investigate.

Boland also wants the university president to determine how many students have been let in based on who they know and how long the practice has been going on. The state representative says those admissions, so-called "Category One," should be eliminated.

"We must end this category now, immediately and permanently. There's no place for it in the higher education system, which should be a meritocracy," said the Democratic state representative who represents East Moline.

Boland also denounced a plan by the university to do its own investigation of the scandal. He wants it done by outsiders.
