8,000 Chicago volunteers for Serve-A-Thon

June 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) The volunteers met in Grant Park for the 16th annual Chicago Cares Serve-A-Thon. They were thanked by many officials, including Chicago Public Schools CEO Ron Huberman. Then, they boarded buses to take them to 39 schools.

"The 8,000 people volunteering today, who've come out in the pouring rain to spend their day working with the Chicago Public Schools system, is just a great testimony to Chicago," Huberman said. "All that makes a tremendous difference to the schools, to the students. So, we're very excited to have this happen today."

Huberman added that it would cost the financially-strapped school system millions of dollars if it had to pay for all the work the volunteers do.
