Four sickened at Palos Hills event

June 23, 2009 (CHICAGO) They were at the Junior Olympics event at 107th and Michael Drive in Palos Hills.

Firefighters say the children became overheated and got sick. They were taken to hospitals and treated for heat exposure.

The mayor of Palos Hills says the event organizers were prepared for an emergency.

"We had a tent out there. We had water stations-- actually we had an ambulance out there in case anything would happen or transpire," said Mayor Jerry Bennett, Palos Hills.

Health officials are offering tips for avoiding heat stroke:

  • The Lake County Health Department suggests avoiding caffeine and alcohol.
  • Drink extra water and eat frequent small meals.
  • and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
