Killer of ex-Evansville mayor sentenced again

July 2, 2009 (LOGANSPORT, Ind.) A Cass County judge gave 65-year-old Julie Van Orden the maximum sentence for her conviction on attempted murder charges. Jurors last month found Van Orden guilty but mentally ill for the 2006 attack in which she stabbed Logansport State Hospital attendant Theodore Shriver 13 times.

Van Orden also was found guilty but insane in the 1980 shooting death of Russell Lloyd less than three months after he had left office as Evansville's mayor. His son, Russell Lloyd Jr., later also became mayor.

Van Orden was about to be released from prison in 2000 when a judge committed her to a mental hospital.
