Authorities search for stolen fireworks

July 2, 2009 (CHICAGO) 5,000 pounds of fireworks were stolen last month from a storage trailer in west suburban Woodridge.

Most of it has been recovered, but with July 4th approaching, officials worry the powerful shells will end up being fired by amateurs in backyards and local parks.

Authorities say the majority of missing items are 5-inch mortar shells.

They say the fuses on the shells are deceptively long and burn very quickly.

Anyone who comes across the devices should contact authorities immediately.
