Ryan Air explores standing room on flights

July 6, 2009 The head of Ryan Air is seeking permission from the Irish aviation authority to allow standing room on its flights.

The low cost airline says it's seeking approval before ordering new aircraft. Ryan Air says it's talked with Boeing about designing aircraft with standing room.

Passengers would be huddled next to bar stool-type seats with belts securing them.

Ryan Air says it got the idea from Chinese airline Spring which has a similar plan. Spring Airline estimates that it can add about 50 percent more passengers and cut costs by about 20 percent.

Ryan Air has proposed a lot of other cost-cutting measures like charging passengers to use the bathroom during flights.
