Doctors' white coats could be going away

July 6, 2009 (WASHINGTON) It turns out the coats may be a breeding ground for germs.

The AMA is studying whether or not to encourage hospitals to establish a dress code to decrease the likelihood of spreading illnesses.

If the coats go by the wayside, those white coat ceremonies held at medical schools across the country would be outdated.

Doctors first started wearing white coats about 100 years ago to associate themselves with scientists.
