Stroger vetoes sales tax rollback

July 24, 2009 (CHICAGO) In a statement released on Friday, Stroger says the move would gut funding essential for county services.

On Tuesday, the board voted to cut the county's portion of the sales tax by half a penny.

Stroger also says agencies are being asked to identify reductions in staff, funding and services with that tax reduction in mind.

The votes of 14 out of 17 board members are needed for a veto override. They are likely to override Stroger's veto at their next board meeting on September 1.
