Study: Probiotics may fight flu symptoms

July 27, 2009 A new study in the journal Pediatrics finds T-probiotics, healthy bacteria now added to many foods, seem to boost the immune system.

According to the research, young children given common probiotics twice a day had significantly reduced cases of fever, coughing and runny nose.

Probiotics are thought to boost immunity by supplementing existing bacterial defenses in the digestive system.

Some doctors are skeptical about the results, saying the study was ordered up by a company with a financial stake in its success. These doctors stress getting the flu vaccine is still the single most important step a family can take to prevent the seasonal flu.
