Durbin advocates health care reform

August 2, 2009 3:30:16 PM PDT
Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin was making a push Sunday for bipartisan support for health care reform.Durbin was joined by Dr. Javette Orgain, president of the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians. Both say the country's health care system is broken, and it must be fixed sooner rather than later.

"Something is fundamentally wrong when my patients must choose between the health care they need and deserve or food on the table," said Dr. Orgain.

"Buckle your seatbelts for the next six weeks because while Congress is in recess, the forces that oppose change, the ones that want to keep the current system, most of which who are making a fortune out of the current system, are going to pour it on in ways you wouldn't find believable," Durbin said.

The senator also says reforms would prevent insurance companies from refusing coverage because of pre-existing conditions or illness.
