Chicago police report drop in crime

August 7, 2009 (CHICAGO) Officials say murder was down 11 percent in July, compared to the same time last year.

With more people outside during the warm weather, robberies are up 1 percent. But there's been a 9.3 percent drop in total crime, according to preliminary data.

"Thanks to our crime fighting initiative and our emphasis of getting guns off the street, targeting gang activity, crime remains down through the month of July," said Supt. Jody Weis, Chicago Police Department.

Chicago police placed all saturation, tactical, gun and gang enforcement teams in uniform this summer to show a clear increase in police visibility on city streets.
