Plan to increase electric fish barrier

August 12, 2009 An announcement was made Wednesday at navy pier. The barrier system is designed to deter the passage of invasive species, especially Asian carp, between the Great Lakes and Illinois River watersheds.

New DNA tests showed that silver carp were much closer than previously detected. A decision was made to increase barriers.

"We know for a fact that it deters the fish. What we don't know with precision, still, is what the optimal operating parameters are, but we're a lot closer today than we were two months ago," said Maj. Gen. John Peabody, US Army Corps of Engineers.

Some testing needs to be done before the barrier is increased. They hope to be able to do so possibly the next week or so.
