August 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) --Grab some extra change if you take a cab to work. Chicago's fuel surcharge went into effect Thursday. Every cab ride in Chicago now costs an extra 50 cents. The fuel surcharge takes effect when gas prices rise above $2.70 a gallon for seven consecutive business days.
Passengers should look for an orange sign displayed announcing the surcharge. Without that sign, drivers are restricted from collecting the fee.
