Fort Dearborn Park opens in South Loop

August 15, 2009 (CHICAGO) Fort Dearborn Park is at 18th Street and Calumet, which is believed to be the site of the Battle of Fort Dearborn.

Descendants of the battle, Native Americans and War of 1812 re-enactors were among those attending Saturday's dedication.

Chicago alderman Bob Fioretti unveiled a marker honoring the battle for its history. During the 1812 war between the U.S. and Great Britain, some Native American troops allied with the English to stop the westward expansion of the U.S.

A battle between the Native Americans and the Americans was fought on the park's land.
