August 16, 2009 (CHICAGO) --Many city offices will be closed Monday as part of Chicago's efforts to balance the 2009 budget. It's being called a "reduced-service day." City hall, public libraries and health clinics will be closed, and city garbage collection and street sweeping will not take place. The city also will have only the minimum amount of staff for essential city services.
The reduced staffing will not apply to police, fire or other direct public safety providers.
Affected employees will not be paid. Two more reduced service days set for the Friday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.
