Liquor tax to go up for distributors

August 25, 2009 (CHICAGO) Illinois' liquor tax goes up on September 1.

The tax depends on the amount of liquor. For example, it jumps from 90 cents to $1.71 for a one-fifth bottle of distilled spirits.

The tax on a bottle of wine increases from 15 cents to 28 cents. A six pack of beer rises from 10.4 cents to 13 cents.

The tax will help pay for new construction in Illinois.

The tax is paid by the liquor distributors and it's not clear yet if it will be passed on to customers.
