August 31, 2009 (CHICAGO) --
He's not selling furniture, he's promoting Chicago. That's the goal of a new television spot that opens with Tim Smithe, of Walter E. Smithe Furniture fame introducing a cavalcade of local celebrities endorsing Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.Lou Piniella, Mike Ditka, Quentin Tarantino, Conan O'Brien, WLS-AM's Roe Conn and others are featured in the fast-moving spot that uses Cloud Gate - or "the bean" - in Millennium Park as its backdrop. At one point Ditka looks straight into the camera and says "the world deserves an opportunity to see this city."
The spot can be seen above on this page, as well as here.
The public service announcement is the latest effort in a stepped-up campaign to bolster local support for Chicago's bid in the final month before the host city decision October 2nd.
Recently, Chicago restaurateur Billy Dec posted TV and film celebrity endorsements of the city's bid on his website www.achicagothing.com .
Chicago's Olympic bid committee is also airing radio spots featuring professional athletes and former Olympians talking about what hosting the Games would mean to Chicago.
