Dudley Owens Quintet

September 4, 2009 Quickly establishing himself on the Chicago scene, 30-year-old altoist Dudley Owens started listening to Charlie Parker while still in junior high school; he hasn't slowed down since, winning one after another high-school jazz competitions en route to receiving a full scholarship to the University of North Florida - where he studied with Chicago legend Bunky Green. Owens's propulsive style and phat, bluesy sound have impressed listeners at jam sessions on both the north and south sides (particularly at the Green Mill and the Checkerboard Lounge). He shares a penchant for the jazz styles of the 1960s and 70s with the other young members of his quintet: David Young on trumpet, Keith Javors on piano, Brandon Meeks on bass, and Mark Lomax on drums.
