The poor economy is being blamed for a decrease in enrollment at one Illinois university. Officials at Southern Illinois University say overall enrollment at its Carbondale campus this fall is down by more than 300 students when compared to last year.

This is the 5th straight year enrollment has dropped at SIU Carbondale.

But university officials say freshman enrollment grew by 56 students this year. Starting this fall, SIU offered in-state tuition rates to applicants from five surrounding states in an effort to increase enrollment.
