Two people who survived run-ins with armed fugitive Robert Maday before he was captured shared their stories with ABC7.
"He could've killed me. And that's what I was very scared about," Guillermo Gonzalez.
"I'm probably one of the luckiest people alive because I am alive," said Domenica Saverino.
After hiding overnight police say Maday went on a crime spree. They say he carjacked a woman in Hoffman Estates early Friday morning.
About two hours later, Maday robbed a bank in Bloomingdale, according to authorities, then led West Chicago police on a chase that ended in a crash and his capture.
After a little more than 24 hours on the run, Robert Maday's brief taste of freedom ended on a stretcher. He crashed the stolen car he was driving and moments later found himself surrounded with nowhere to go.
Guillermo Gonzalez was at a stoplight on Route 59 in West Chicago in the Jeep that Maday crashed into before he was arrested.
"A minute later there was police coming from everywhere. And just getting there. They were all pulling guns and rifles. And I said to myself, I don't want to get out of the car," said Gonzalez.
Police found a gun in Maday's waistband and another in the car, guns he allegedly stole from two officers when he escaped from custody Thursday.
"He did not take any action towards the police officers. He was moving his hands but he quickly realized that the incident was over," said Kim Widup, U.S. Marshal.
Police also recovered several thousand dollars he allegedly stole from the First American Bank in Bloomingdale on Friday morning. It's the same bank he's already confessed to robbing in November of 2008.
The Harris Bank in Buffalo Grove released a security camera picture from another bank robbery attributed to Maday around the same time. After leaving the bank with cash in hand he apparently needed transportation so he allegedly stole Domenica's Saverino's Volkswagon Jetta at gunpoint, apparently expecting her to know who he was.
"He goes, didn't you hear about the convict that escaped last night. He goes, that's me. And I looked at him in shock, like, what are you talking about," said Saverino.
Saverino says Maday tried to get her to get in the car with him.
"I said I'm not going anywhere with you," said Saverino. "I gave him the keys. He said, start the engine. I said, you know how to operate the car. Just leave. And he took off."
The Cook County state's attorneys investigators Maday escaped from on Thursday were removed of their police powers on Friday pending further investigation.
Once Maday was recaptured an army of officers kept a close eye on him.
"I can't speak for how other agencies transport personnel. I know how we transport them, and he will not get away," said Widup.
Investigators say they received hundreds of tips overnight and on Friday of sightings of Maday.
