There was a loss of pressure at a pumping station and contaminated water may have seeped back into the system.
The McHenry County Health Department says the boil order affects 325 homes and 8 businesses served by the Eastwood Manor Water Company. All are located in an area bordered by Route 120 on the south, Lincoln Road on the north, Chapel Hill Road on the east, and Hillside Lane on the west.
