Two shot in Lakeview robbery

September 26, 2009 (CHICAGO) An adult male and adult female were shot and taken in "stable" condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said.

According to police, the man and woman were in the 500 block of West Stratford Place at about 3:18 a.m. when someone grabbed the female's handbag and attempted to rob the pair. They resisted the robber and were shot.

The man, 26, was shot in the side of his body, and the 25-year-old woman was shot in her leg, Gaines said.

No one was in custody as of Saturday afternoon. Area residents speaking with ABC7 said they hoped the incident was not part of a trend.

"I've always felt safe here. So, let,s hope this was a random incident and not something that is going to continue," Jim Lafrancis said.

"It will make me more cautious about going out in the evening or in the dark," said Sandy Swantek.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
