The curtain went up Saturday night on the 55th season of the Lyric Opera of Chicago in spite of a contract dispute between management and the company's orchestra. Union members met Saturday and agreed to play the opening night's performance of Puccini's "Tosca."

Orchestra members want a 22 percent wage and benefit increase over the next four years.

Lyric has been hit by the recession with its endowment down by 30 percent and subscriptions off by 13 percent.
