Chicago Public Library cuts branch hours

Chicago's branch libraries will be open fewer hours starting in January.The Harold Washington Library would not be impacted and neither would the city's two regional libraries-- Sulzer on the North Side and Woodson on the South Side.

The plan is still being worked out, but it calls for 76 branches to open later and close earlier.

A library spokeswoman says the changes are necessary because the libraries have had a hiring freeze for years that has eroded staffing levels
