Report: Which foods might make you sick?

October 6, 2009 A report from the Center for Science in the Public Interest puts the spotlight on the foods responsible for the most food borne illness over the last 20 years.

Although the contamination of meat always tops the list of foods most likely to make you sick, this list focuses only on products that the Food and Drug Administration regulates. According to the non-profit consumer group, the foods that did make the list account for almost 40 percent of all food borne outbreaks since 1990.

The sicknesses have been linked to pathogens such as E. Coli, salmonella and norovirus

Topping the list is leafy greens, with 363 outbreaks, followed by eggs with 352. Tuna , oysters and potatoes are also in the top five. Others include cheese, ice cream tomatoes, sprouts and berries.

CSPI says the purpose of the report is to call attention to a congressional bill to overhaul FDA regulation.
