Report: NKorea fires 5 short-range missiles off east coast

October 12, 2009 (SEOUL, South Korea) The Yonhap news agency cites an unidentified South Korean government official as saying Pyongyang fired five short-range missiles off its east coast today.

Yonhap also reports that the North has set up a no-sail zone in an area off its east coast for the next week.

The news comes after South Korea proposed working-level talks with its communist neighbor earlier today. Seoul proposed a meeting to discuss how to prevent floods in the Imjin River, which runs through the two countries heavily armed border. The South also proposed a separate meeting of Red Cross officials to discuss reunions of families separated by the Korean War.

However, a government spokesman says Seoul has no plan to resume high-level dialogue with the North.
