Defense tries to avoid death penalty in Brown's murder trial

October 14, 2009 A clinical psychologist says the man convicted of killing seven people at the Palatine restaurant in 1993 grew up in a violent, sexually abusive home.

Dr. Robert Shapiro counseled Degorski's parents in the 1980s and got to know their children. He says the family was one of the most dysfunctional he's ever seen.

Degorski was found guilty of the murders last month. Juan Luna was convicted in 2007 and sentenced to life in prison.
