Man charged after being shot by police

October 19, 2009 (CHICAGO) Paul H. Washington, 41, was shot Saturday night after, officers say, he pointed a gun at them. He faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault of a peace officer, felon in possession of a weapon and lack of firearm license.

He is currently hospitalized at Northwestern in stable condition after officers patrolling the area near the 8200-block of South Marquette Avenue say they saw a man standing on a porch with a weapon in his hand. They ordered him to drop it, but he reportedly fired in their direction.

Police returned fire, striking him.

After allegedly trying to flee, police say he then shot at officers a second time. Officers again returned fire, hitting him several times.

The man was taken into custody and to a hospital.

A weapon was recovered at the scene, police say.

The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
