Guidelines released for diabetic pregnant women

October 22, 2009 The international diabetes federation says early action is key for women who develop gestational diabetes. The report also says pregnant women with abnormal blood sugar tests should be considered for diabetes treatment.

It advises diabetic women who want to get pregnant to talk to their doctors about possibly stopping oral blood sugar medications and certain blood pressure drugs.

The guidelines also advise anyone who manages their diabetes with oral medication to keep track of their blood glucose.

Past advice only had people taking insulin injections checking their blood sugar levels at home.
