Teen fatally shot on way to school

October 26, 2009 (CHICAGO) Friends and family created a memorial on Monday night for 17-year-old Martel Barrett.

Relatives say he was on his way to catch a bus when he was shot this morning near 67th and Damen in the Englewood neighborhood.

Barrett was a student at Dyett High School. His family called him 'Bird' because he was tall and skinny. They say he was a good kid who was always smiling and joking.

"He was a funny, caring person. He made you laugh. If you were down, he put a smile on your face anytime, no matter what you were going through. You see him, he going to make you laugh," said Mamie Levy, cousin.

Chicago police say they have not made any arrests in the shooting.
