There is an apparent shortage of police officers with the Chicago Police Department. The department is authorized to have 13,500 officers on the force.

But a review of public records by the Chicago Sun-Times found currently the police department is nearly 2,000 officers short of its authorized strength.

So far this year, 46 new officers have been hired.

Mayor Daley's 2010 budget includes funding to hire 86 more.
