Former Ill. student convicted in terrorism case

October 30, 2009 Thursday, a federal judge in Peoria, Ill. sentenced al-Marri to eight years in prison. He pleaded guilty to providing material support to a terrorist group.

Video released by the U.S. military shows al-Marri at the brig in South Carolina, where he spent nearly six years without being charged.

Al-Marri's lawyers showed the video in court as part of their argument that he should not get the maximum of 15 years.

Federal investigators said al-Marri planned to bomb American landmarks.
